Blues push Steelers to brink

The top team from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s regular season is one loss away from being out of the playoffs.

Byron Spriggs stopped 28 shots as the Winnipeg Blues beat the Selkirk Steelers 3-2 on Friday in Selkirk. The Blues lead their best-of-seven Addison Division semifinal 3-0, with a chance to complete the sweep tonight in Winnipeg.

Jordan McCallum had a goal and an assist for the Blues. Parker Thomas scored a goal and set up another for the Steelers, who finished 34 points ahead of the Blues during the regular season.

In Friday’s other game, Taylor Sanheim set up two third-period goals, including a one by fellow Elkhorn native Brad Bowles, as the Portage Terriers earned a 2-0 road win over the Steinbach Pistons.

Zac Robidoux made 28 saves for the shutout as the Terriers tied the Addison semifinal 2-2, with Game 5 tomorrow in Steinbach.

The Virden Oil Capitals visit the Swan Valley Stampeders tonight, hoping to tie their Sher-Wood Division semifinal 2-2, while the Dauphin Kings can sweep the other Sher-Wood semifinal with a win over the OCN Blizzard tonight in The Pas.
