A late run cost the Brandon University Bobcats men’s basketball team in their Wesmen Classic opener on Friday.
Brandon was outscored 7-0 in the final two minutes and two seconds of their quarter-final game against the Dickinson State (N.D.) University Blue Hawks, falling 75-72 at Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre.
The game turned with 19 seconds left. A call went against the Bobcats, who were up by one, and the Blue Hawks capitalized with a hoop and harm to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Brandon’s Ilarion Bonhomme had a late three-point attempt blocked to seal the final result.
While Bobcats head coach Gil Cheung admitted there was some rust, he was pleased with his team’s effort.
"Overall, the guys competed well, we just didn't execute as well as we hoped down the stretch," he said.
Jordan Reaves led Brandon with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Kenonte Ramsey chipped in with 13 points, while Bonhomme had 12 and Ali-Mounir Benabdelhak scored 11.
Brandon was without import centre Isaiah James, recovering from an ankle procedure he had over the Christmas break.
The Bobcats will take on the Northern British Columbia Timberwolves today in the consolation semifinals.
