The Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team rebounded from a disappointing loss on Friday with a dominating victory on Saturday in Edmonton.
Vaovai Aiono had 12 kills and two stuff blocks for the Bobcats (3-1), ranked sixth in the country, as they swept the host Alberta Pandas 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-23). Kellie Baker had 30 assists, was perfect on her two attacks, served up a pair of aces and was involved in six blocks for the Bobcats, who got nine kills from Shanlee McLennan. Karly Janssen led Alberta (1-3) with 15 kills.
Meanwhile, the BU men’s volleyball team, ranked fourth in the country, dropped its second straight match to the host Alberta Golden Bears (4-0) on Saturday. Ryan Nikifor had 16 kills with Jay Olmstead and Ryley Barnes adding 15 apiece in the Golden Bears 3-1 (25-12, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15) win. Sam Tuivai led the Bobcats (2-2), who posted a team attack percentage of .071, with 10 kills. Tuivai and Boutwell both were involved in seven blocks.
Brandon (2-2) was without the services of Sebastien Steigmeier again, who injured his knee Friday. Brandonite Daryl McCharles filled in at right side for the Bobcats in the first set before giving way to last year’s starting right side Roy Ching.
THUNDER: Brandonite Lisa Barclay had 22 kills and a .528 hitting percentage on Saturday as the UBC Thunderbirds (4-0) swept the Manitoba Bisons 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19).
