The Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team made a clean sweep of the opening day of its pre-season tournament.
The Bobcats needed three sets in each match as they knocked off the University of Manitoba Bisons and the Lakeland Rustlers at BU’s Healthy Living Centre on Friday night. Brandon closed out the day with a dominating 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-15) victory over the Bisons. Shanlee McLennan led the team with 13 kills, while Meaghan Robertson added eight. Lexi Loewen was a force at the net with seven blocks while Jodie Baker added three for BU.
The Bobcats opened the day with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-19) win over the Rustlers, an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference team that features Brandonites Laura Popplestone and Tristan Neudorf. Baker and Regan Dahl led the Bobcat team, largely made up of back-up players, with nine kills apiece. Gillian Leech and Loewen both added eight, while McLennan had three aces and Donata Huebert dug up 17 balls.
Brandon will take on Manitoba again tonight at 6:30 and Lakeland on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Manitoba plays Lakeland today at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile in Winnipeg, the Bobcats women’s basketball team earned a 61-53 pre-season victory over the Bisons.
Cassie Cooke led the Bobcats offensively with 24 points, seven assists and five steals. Kaela Cranston added 14 points and Aleah Bridges had eight. Jaynell Gillett was Brandon’s top rebounder with seven and also scored six points.
In Regina, the Bobcats men’s volleyball team opened the Cougars’ pre-season tournament with a 3-1 (25-21, 12-25, 25-17, 25-15) victory over the Bisons. Sebastien Steigmeier had 21 kills and four aces, while Sam Tuivai added 14 kills and one block for the Bobcats.
The BU men’s basketball team was off on Friday but will return to the court on Sunday when it hosts the Windsor Lancers at noon at the Healthy Living Centre.
