The Brandon University Bobcats started their post-Christmas schedule by wrapping up a 78-52 triumph over the University of Northern B.C. Timberwolves to open the Wesmen Classic men’s basketball tournament at the University of Winnipeg on Wednesday afternoon.
Fifth-year forward Kyle Vince led the Bobcats with a game-high 25 point-performance, including going 6-for-9 from three-point range, while Emerick Ravier added 16 points and 11 rebounds for BU. Eric Schippers added five points and six rebounds for the Bobcats, who advance to today’s semifinal against UBC-Okanagan at 8:30 p.m.
"It was a good game for us," said Bobcats head coach Gil Cheung, via telephone. "We got 10 guys with at least 10 minutes of game time, so we played everybody and I thought it was a good effort on the defensive end and it was just good to get everybody back on the floor again and it was a good start to the second semester for us. I thought we looked pretty good for a Christmas break tournament."
UNBC’s Francis Rowe replied with 21 points.
In other holiday action, the Bobcats women’s volleyball team will play host to the inaugural Conferences of Canada Challenge at the BU gymnasium, beginning Thursday. Brandon will be joined by the McGill Martlets, Guelph Gryphons and the Dalhousie Tigers.
Meanwhile, the BU men’s volleyball team is off to California for a three-game NCAA exhibition tour that begins today when the Bobcats face the University of California Irvine Anteaters.
