The Brandon University Bobcats basketball teams opened their homecoming weekend with a pair of wins at the Healthy Living Centre on Friday night.
Cassie Cooke got things going early and often for the BU women’s basketball team as they beat the Dakota College Jacks 72-48. Cooke led Brandon with 28 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Kaela Cranston added 11 points, while Ambrea McDonald-Okoro had nine points and eight boards. Imani Scott led Dakota, a junior college in Bottineau, N.D., with 12 points. Brandonite Taylor Ward is a member of the Jacks.
The BU men’s basketball team kept things rolling in the later game. Emerick Ravier had a team-high 18 points as the Bobcats beat the Jacks 83-61.
Homecoming weekend continues today with the women’s teams facing off again at 1:30 p.m., followed by the men’s teams at 3:30. The Bobcats’ Wall of Fame, named after Dick and Verda McDonald, will be unveiled at 11 a.m.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats men’s volleyball team beat the Laval Rouge et Or for the second straight night in Quebec City on Friday. Sam Tuivai had 22 kills, two aces and a block as Brandon beat the defending national champions 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 15-9). Sebastien Steigmeier supplied 15 kills, one block and an ace for BU, while Frank Jones added 11 kills and two blocks. The Bobcats will close out their exhibition season with one last match against Laval tonight.
