Jordan Reaves posted a double-double in all three games at the Wesmen Classic men’s basketball tournament on the weekend and guided the Brandon University Bobcats to the consolation side championship.
Reaves put up 16 points and grabbed 13 boards in Sunday’s consolation final, which Brandon won 75-53 over the Keyano College Huskies.
Michael (Reggie) Smith led the Bobcats with 18 points, while Ali-Mounir Benabdelhak chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds.
While Reaves stepped up big on the weekend, BU head coach Gil Cheung was impressed with his team’s overall effort.
“I think everyone contributed all weekend,” he said. “Jordan had some good games, Ilarion (Bonhomme) did, Ali did, but it was a team effort. Everyone got in games. They played big minutes today and I think defensively we were a little bit sharper than we looked in the first semester. We’ll look to build on some of those positives and hopefully have a good week of practice coming up and have a good start to the second semester.”
On Saturday, Reaves had 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Bobcats bounced the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 87-73 in a consolation semifinal. Benabdelhak netted a game-high 21 points for the Bobcats, while Bonhomme contributed 15 for BU.
Meanwhile at Minot, N.D., Aimee Johnston scored 14 points and recorded four rebounds for the Bobcats women’s basketball team in their 92-42 loss to the Minot State Beavers in an exhibition contest on Sunday. Jaynell Gillett chipped in with eight points and six rebounds. Chantel Gaslard had four points and 11 boards.
The Bobcat basketball teams will be back in action on Jan. 11 when they tip off the second half of the Canada West season against the Mount Royal Cougars at the Healthy Living Centre.
