Bobcats win tournament opener

The Brandon University Bobcats received a tough test, but started the second half of the season on a winning note on the opening day of the Mount Royal Cougars Men’s Winter Volleyball Classic on Wednesday in Calgary.

With starters Sam Tuivai (shoulder) and Dan Boutwell (back) nursing injuries, the Bobcats ground out a 3-2 triumph (24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 15-10) over the SAIT Trojans last night.

Right side D.J. McCharles led the Bobcats with 13 kills, four digs and four blocks, while middle Brendan White had eight kills and five blocks and left side Craig Lowe added eight kills and four blocks.

“We knew they were going to be good, and they are apparently one of the top college teams in the country, but with that said, Sam (Tuivai) didn’t play at all and we had Roy Ching playing the middle at the end to rest Dan (Boutwell). So we had kind of a makeshift lineup. All things considered, we were quite pleased to start the second half with the win.”

The Bobcats, ranked seventh in the CIS, began the second half of the season without American imports Randy Preval and Rob McLean, who have quit the team.

Brandon will battle the Regina Cougars this afternoon and the host Mount Royal team tonight, before closing out the round-robin tournament against the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday.

The Bobcats, who sit in third place in the Canada West conference with a 9-3 record, resume league play on Jan. 10 on the road against the defending national champion Trinity Western Spartans.
