Brandon extends win streak

The Brandon Midget AAA Wheat Kings are rolling right now.

Brandon stretched its Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League winning streak to 10 games on Saturday with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Kenora Thistles at the Sportsplex.

Like much of their winning streak, it wasn’t any easy win. Tanner Kaspick was the only Wheat King to get any of their 39 shots past the Thistles goalie.

Of the past 10 Wheat Kings games, five have been decided by a single goal with two of those being settled in overtime and two others going to a shootout.

While Brandon head coach Ken Schneider likes that this roll has put his team on top of the West Division standings with a 12-2-0 record, he feels like they’ve gotten lucky along the way.

“I think our guys have worked pretty hard at practice but we’ve been pretty fortunate too,” he said. “We’ve had a few breaks the last few games and I think if you ask the guys, we haven’t been our best but we’ve managed to endure and we’ve found ways to win.”

Tyler Coulter and Duncan Campbell both scored in the shootout on Saturday. Tyler Gutenberg made 22 saves.

Brandon was supposed to play the Winnipeg Wild on Sunday, but the game was postponed due to closed highways.

Schneider believes this 10-game winning streak will pay huge dividends down the road, but he doesn’t want his team to get too caught up in it. He knows it puts a big target on his players’ backs for the rest of the season, and other teams will now be gunning for the Wheat Kings.

“We realize we’re just over a quarter of the way through the season and a lot of things can happen yet,” he said. “We hope these positive experiences will work in our favour as we work our way toward the end of the season.”

In one of Sunday’s games, it was Kenora Thistles 3, Southwest Cougars 1.

Elsewhere on Saturday, it was Yellowhead Chiefs 4, Southwest Cougars 3 (SO).

At Souris, Brandon Pentek and Mikko Keski-Pukkila both scored in the third period to lift the Thistles (8-7-2) to the win. Michael Fortin replied for the Cougars (6-7-2) in the second period. Josh Diaz made 29 saves in the losing effort.

At Souris, Taylor Sanheim set up two goals in regulation time and scored the only goal in the shootout for Yellowhead (10-2-2).

Shawn Bowles, Travis Sanheim and Tyler Dereniwski all scored for Yellowhead. Sheldon Kowalchuk, Tanner Lewis and Daylon Creasy, who scored with 11 seconds left in regulation time, replied for the Cougars.
