Brandon quartet on U-16 shortlist

Sixteen Westman hockey players have advanced to the next stage of making either Hockey Manitoba’s under-16 men’s team or its under-18 women’s squad.

Brandon’s James Shearer, Jordy Stallard, Jesse Lawrence and Tyson Verhelst, as well as Rivers forward Ashton Anderson, Boissevain forward Meyer Nell, Melita defenceman Cole Oliver and Russell forward Rylee Zimmer have been invited to the U-16 team’s final camp Aug. 8-11 in Winnipeg. Verhelst is one of two goalies invited to the final camp. Lawrence and Shearer are defencemen while Stallard is a forward.

The camp will help the coaches whittle the team from 26 players to the final roster for the Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup, which will be played Nov. 1-4 in Calgary.

Meanwhile, Glenboro defenceman Jessica Vallotton and goalie Brittni Mowat will compete in exhibition games against the University of Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team Sept. 14-16 in Winnipeg in an attempt to earn a spot on their provincial team. They will be joined by Brandon forward Ashleigh Brykaliuk, Bruxelles forward Cassidy Carels, Hartney defenceman Melissa Hunt, Virden forward Karissa Kirkup, Neepawa defenceman Halli Krzyzaniak, MacGregor forward Courtlyn Oswald and 14 other players.

The final roster will be announced later in September with the team competing at the national championship, Nov. 7-11 in Dawson Creek, B.C.
