The Brandon Marlins and Brandon Cloverleafs both took their Manitoba Senior Baseball League season openers on Friday.
Matt Gunning went 2-for-3, came around to score three times and drove in another run as the Cloverleafs jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings in Reston on their way to an 8-4 win over the Rockets. Justin Funk added two RBIs, while Kevin McNeil hit a solo blast.
Sean Dryden earned the win after scattering three runs and eight hits in five innings. Zane Sawyer took the loss for the defending champions. He went four innings, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs.
Buddy Mayert was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Reston (0-1), while Rory Tycoles drove in a pair of runs.
Meanwhile, in Oak River, Patrick Vandoorne scored one run and drove in another as the Marlins doubled up the host Dodgers 6-3. Matt DeGagne was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Shayne MacGranachan retired all three batters he faced in the fifth to pick up the win in relief.
Taw Fredrickson took the loss for the Dodgers (0-2). He lasted six innings, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out four. Duncan Paddock had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs for Oak River, while Riley Acra came around to score twice.
