Barry Twerdun will have one of the best seats in the house for the Ryder Cup.
The Brandonite is on the course at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois as a volunteer this week. He signed up a while ago and is a member of the evacuation committee, which makes him responsible to drive players, caddies and officials off the course in the event of inclement weather.
The weather has been pristine so far, which has given Twerdun the opportunity to enjoy the overall atmosphere of the practice rounds, although he wouldn’t mind giving some of the world’s top golfers a lift.
“It’s just to be there and see the electricity in the crowd,” said Twerdun, who was inspired to volunteer after attending the Ryder Cup in Louisville, Ky., four years ago as a spectator. “It’s pretty calm right now, but from my experiences from being at Louisville, it will get pretty exciting Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”
Twerdun will work two of the three tournament days and plans to use his visitor’s pass to get a close look at the action on his off day. When he is working, Twerdun said he will have a good view of one hole where he will be able to watch all 24 competitors play.
Twerdun has also used his time in Illinois to network and has decided he wants to volunteer at future Ryder Cups and PGA events. He’s already looking at volunteering at the Ryder Cup in Scotland in 2014, the PGA Championship in Kentucky in 2014 and the 2016 Ryder Cup in Minnesota.
“I have a passion for golf and this is a neat way to see some pretty good golf,” Twerdun said. “You get to meet new people and it’s a great time to socialize and watch some good golf.”
