The Canadian men’s volleyball team came away with a pair of wins in its opening weekend of the World League in Calgary.
Brandonite Dustin Schneider had two aces and a block, while Rivers’ Toon Van Lankvelt had a block in the only rally he played in during the weekend as Canada beat Finland 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 15-11) on Sunday. Gavin Schmitt led Canada with 25 kills, while John Perrin added 20.
On Saturday, Schneider started all three sets as setter while Van Lankvelt didn’t get on the court in Canada’s 3-0 (25-21, 25-29, 25-20) sweep of Finland. Schmitt had 12 kills, three blocks and an ace in that match.
Canada (2-0) sits in second place in the Pool C standings with five points, one point behind Belgium (2-0), which had a pair of three-set wins over Australia in the previous weekend. The Canadians will travel to Belgium for their next two matches on Friday and Sunday.
