Canada upset Cuba and cruised into the semifinals at the NORCECA Men’s Olympic Qualification Tournament on Wednesday night in Long Beach, California.
The Canadians, ranked 18th in the world, stunned the fifth-ranked Cubans on the final night of pool play, sweeping the match 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-21). Toon Van Lankvelt of Rivers had four kills and four blocks to help lead Canada, which also features setter Dustin Schneider of Brandon. Gavin Schmitt notched 17 kills while Frederic Winters had 15 kills for the Canadians (3-0). Fernando Ramos Hernandez replied with 12 kills for the Cubans (2-1), who will now play Trinidad and Tobago in today’s quarter-finals.
