Cardinals survive semifinal scare from Diamond Dawgs

The defending champion Canadian Tire Cardinals are back in the Andrew Agencies Senior AA Baseball League final after a wild 10-9 win over the Diamond Dawgs on Tuesday at Brandon Field.

The Dawgs scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 9-7 lead, but the Cardinals replied with three of their own, capped by George McNeill’s sacrifice fly that brought in Kirk Graham for the winning run.

Chris Kennedy went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs as the Cardinals won the best-of-three semifinal series 2-1. Adam Hartman, Jeff Neufeld and Graham all went 3-for-4. Hartman tripled, stole a base, drove in three runs and scored two more, while Neufeld had a walk, a stolen base, two doubles and two runs scored.

Jody Anderson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Diamond Dawgs, while Ian Barr was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Relief pitcher Shayne MacGranachan earned the win for the Cardinals, who will face the Joe Beeverz Young Guns in the championship series, which will begin next week. Diamond Dawgs reliever Cody Nolan took the loss.
