The Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team accomplished exactly what they wanted to during their controlled scrimmages with the Regina Cougars and Winnipeg Wesmen at the new Healthy Living Centre over the weekend.
BU head coach Lee Carter believes the team’s starting roster became a little more solidified on Saturday and Sunday and every player is starting to find their role, which makes him feel more confident with the Canada West season opener only two weeks away in Regina.
"It’s good for my confidence and it’s good for the girls who got to see who played a little bit more than who," Carter said. "They have an opportunity to get their mind set around whether they’re coming off the bench or whether they’re a starter. They’re a different mentality."
Victoria Dakin, who will return for her second year as the Bobcats right side, believed the weekend greatly benefitted herself and the team as well.
Dakin just returned to the team this week after missing practices because of a groin injury. After playing in the scrimmages, which had unlimited timeouts in which the coaches could come on the court to explain situations, Dakin feels like she’s getting more comfortable with knowing where she needs to be on the court and where her teammates are as well.
She also liked what she saw from her teammates, especially when compared to Regina and Winnipeg.
"I think we’re maybe a few steps ahead (of them)," said Dakin, who’s one of the Bobcats captains. "I don’t want to sound too confident, but I think that we’re a few steps ahead of them for sure."
While Carer and Dakin believe the team developed a lot over the weekend, they both know the work isn’t done.
Now that people are starting to become more confident in their roles and with the system, they want to solidify every person’s responsibility for the rest of the season.
"We need to get set into what our roles are exactly," Dakin said. "Get everybody on the same page. Knowing our systems really well so when we go into Regina and when we have our home opener, we can just execute right off the bat."
