Cassan to coach Canada West team

Westman native Trent Cassan will lead the Canada West squad in the 2014 World Junior A Hockey Challenge.

The Medora native and current head coach/general manager of the Yorkton Terriers was named head coach of Canada West on Monday and will guide the all-star squad made up of players from the Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. Junior A leagues from Dec. 14-20 in Kindersley, Sask.

Cassan, 31, won a bronze medal as an assistant with the 2013 Canada West squad and led the Terriers to the SJHL and RBC Cup national junior championships this past season. Cassan, the 2013 SJHL coach of the year, has served as head coach of the Terriers for the past five seasons and recently re-signed a two-year contract extension.

The World Junior A Challenge will feature Canada West and Canada East all-star teams facing off against international squads from the United States, Russia, Czech Republic and Switzerland.
