The Yellowhead Chiefs survived a scare on Tuesday in Shoal Lake, blowing a three-goal lead in the final 2:39 of the third period before beating the Interlake Lightning 5-4 in overtime to advance to the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League playoffs.
Ashton Anderson scored 6:21 into OT as Yellowhead won the one-game tiebreaker for eighth place. The Lightning, who finished the regular season tied with the Chiefs at 19-21-4, scored twice in the final 46 seconds of regulation, netting the tying goal with only two seconds to play. Morgan Geekie and Josh Martin both scored twice in regulation for the Chiefs, with Tanner Koroscil assisting on all four goals. Geekie also had an assist.
The Wheat Kings will host the Chiefs in Game 1 of their quarter-final series at the Sportsplex on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
