Shawn Bowles scored his second goal of the game in overtime to lift the Yellowhead Chiefs to a 2-1 win over the Southwest Cougars in both teams’ season opener in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League on Friday night.
Tanner Kyle, Tanner Koroscil, Jake Coulter and Nolan Speiss all picked up assists for Yellowhead.
Meyer Nell scored for Southwest, while Wyatt Kalynuk and Jordan McCausland picked up assists.
Tyson Verhelst made 26 saves for the Cougars, while Matthew Short stopped 16 shots for the Chiefs.
In Friday’s other game, it was Brandon Wheat Kings 9, NorMan Northstars 4.

At Thompson, Tyler Coulter and Brett Kitt both scored a pair of goals and Brandon Switzer had a four-point night for the Wheat Kings in their season opener.
Switzer finished with one goal and three assists. Carter McMurdo, Jesse Lawrence, Coltyn Bates and Duncan Campbell also sniped for Brandon, which scored three times in each period.
Trent Laycock and Boyd Langan led the Northstars with a goal and an assist each.
Justin Holder made 38 saves in the Brandon net while Aaron Vallance made 33 stops for NorMan. Brandon was
2-for-10 on the power play. NorMan was 1-for-7.
