Matt Gunning went 3-for-5 with a grand slam home run and a three-run double as the Brandon Cloverleafs beat the Oak River Dodgers 16-4 at Andrews Field on Sunday night.
Gunning also crossed home plate three times for the Manitoba Senior Baseball League leading Cloverleafs (2-0), who held a 13-0 lead after three innings. Kevin McNeil went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and two batted in, while Derrick Chapman and Jason Rae both scored three times for the victors.
Anthony Friesen held the Dodgers (0-3) to two runs and three hits while striking out 12 in seven innings of work to earn the win. Nat Howard took the loss for the Dodgers. He was charged with 13 runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Colin Bates went 2-for-5 for Oak River with three RBIs, while Josh McInnes scored two runs.
Meanwhile, in Neepawa, Tramer Ray went 2-for-3 with four runs and an RBI as the Reston Rockets (1-1) exploded for eight runs in the first two innings and hung on for a 12-9 win over the host Farmers (1-1).
Buddy Mayert, Mitch Olson, Andrew Lochhead, Eric Tuscott and Zane Sawyer all drove in a pair of runs for Reston, while Cole Stober allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out seven in six scoreless innings to pick up the win.
Jason Kirkland was chased from the mound in second inning and took the loss for Neepawa. He gave up seven runs, six of which were earned.
Cam Tibbett paced the Farmers with his 4-for-5 effort with two runs scored and three RBIs. The Farmers scored all their runs in the final three innings.
