Amanda Coey of the Westman Wildcats has verbally committed to playing NCAA Division 3 women’s hockey for the Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets next season.
The 5-foot-6 senior forward from Brandon has scored 12 goals and notched 26 points in 43 games overall for the Wildcats and has one goal and five points in 16 regular-season games in the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League. Coey has notched 67 goals and 61 assists in her Wildcats career.
Coey is the fourth member of the Wildcats to commit to a U.S. school for 2013-14, joining Brandon’s Ashleigh Brykaliuk (University of Minnesota-Duluth), Virden’s Karissa Kirkup (Maine) and Ninette’s Jessica Vallotton (Maine), who have all earned full-ride NCAA Division 1 scholarships.
For Coey, 17, it was an easy choice to commit to Wisconsin-Superior.
"It’s a little different thinking about living somewhere else ... but I’ve always liked the team and the coaches are really good," she said.
Wildcats teammate Kristen Campbell, 15, has been named the MFMHL goaltender of the month after the Brandonite went 3-1 with two shutouts and an impressive 0.50 goals-against average in four games in December. Overall this season, the Grade 10 student has posted a 1.11 goals-against average and a .956 save percentage in 10 league games for the Wildcats, who sit in second place in the MFMHL with a 13-5-1 record.
