Sean Common did a little bit of everything for the Brandon Barbarians as they rolled to a 33-20 victory over the Winnipeg Assassins in a Rugby Manitoba Division 1 men’s match Saturday in Winnipeg.
Common scored two tries, while hitting two penalty kicks, two conversions and a drop kick. Kyle Crowston and Brad Lewis added tries for the Barbarians (11-3), who have clinched first place in the division and home field advantage throughout the playoffs, with one week remaining in the regular season.
“It was a really good character win for our first division,” said Barbarians coach Jon Fitzpatrick whose team will host the Highlanders on Sunday in Minnedosa. “We’re missing four or five of our regular starters and some pretty key role players, and we played a lot of defence. … We defended for probably 30 to 40 minutes in the second half there and we held strong on the line.”
The other two Barbarians teams suffered losses that will damage their playoff hopes.
The Division 2 men’s team lost 24-20 to the Assassins Saturday. Shawn Sarkonak, Andrew Halliday, Shane Morgan and Aaron Kaluzniak scored the Brandon tries.
The Barbarians (4-8-1) did keep their playoff hopes alive by scoring a pair of bonus points, but sitting three points behind the fourth-place Thistles, they need to end the regular season with a victory over Sturgeon Creek Sunday in Minnedosa and have to hope for a loss by the Thistles.
Meanwhile, the Barbarians women’s team was shut out by the undefeated Assassins, 92-0, but bounced back with a 54-0 win over the Winnipeg Brumbies in Minnedosa on Sunday.
Jamee George scored three tries and added two conversions, Cassandra Lesiuk had three tries, Kayla Bauche had two tries and Leann Murray and Chantal Cermak added singles.
The win improved Brandon’s record to 7-6.
