Conrad strikes twice for Team West

Colt Conrad, a Brandon Wheat Kings prospect from St. Alphonse, scored a pair of goals for Team West at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Monday, but it wasn’t enough to stop Team Pacific from posting a 6-3 victory in North Sydney, N.S.

Matteo Gennaro had two goals and an assist for Pacific (1-1), which exploded for four straight goals in the opening frame to take control of the game. Wheat Kings forward Braylon Shmyr was held off the scoresheet for Pacific, which also got goals from Giorgio Estephan, Tyler Benson, Brad Morrison and Tyler Soy.

Connor Hobbs netted the other marker for West (0-1). Jesse Gabrielle, a Wheat King left-winger, took 14 minutes in penalties in the game and was held without a point.

West, which also includes Virden defenceman Wyatt Kalynuk, Boissevain forward Meyer Nell and Brandon goalie Tyson Verhelst, will try to get its first win of the event today when it takes on the Czech Republic (1-1) in Sydney.

Pacific returns to the ice on Wednesday to face the Czechs.
