Tyson Verhelst proved to be a little bit better in a battle of goalies Sunday in Elkhorn.
The Brandonite didn’t allow any of the 23 shots he faced get past him as the Southwest Cougars (16-14-2) defeated the Yellowhead Chiefs 1-0 in their first Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League game since the Christmas break. It was Verhelst’s second shutout of the season.
Jordan McCausland scored the only goal on the power play with 2:48 left in the first. Daylon Creasy had an assist.
Matthew Short made 27 saves for Yellowhead (21-9-2).
