Cougars win opener

Meyer Nell, Cameron Whyte and Carter Suski each had one goal and one assist for the Southwest Cougars as they opened up their best-of-three Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League preliminary round playoff series with a 4-3 win over the visiting Central Plains Capitals on Wednesday night in Souris.

Daylon Creasy netted the other goal for the Cougars and Tanner Lewis picked up a pair of assists. Tyson Verhelst made 38 saves to earn the win for Southwest, which finished fourth in the West at 23-19-2.

Game 2 will be played on Friday at 8:30 p.m., in Portage la Prairie.
