Stephanie Hunter’s triple-double led the Crocus Plainsmen past the Neelin Spartans in a 44-40 overtime thriller on Thursday to open the Brandon High School Basketball League’s varsity girls’ final.
Hunter had 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocks for the Plainsmen, who hosted Game 1 of the best-of-three series because Neelin’s gym was unavailable due to an open house. Desirae Peiffer had seven points, while Stacey Shearer had five points and 10 rebounds for Crocus, which can wrap up the series with a win on Tuesday at 6 p.m., at Neelin.
Paige Thomson led the Spartans with 14 points, while teammates Jordan Hardy and Kristine Ward chipped in with nine apiece.
Meanwhile, Theo Farough scored 17 points to pace the Spartans to a 68-45 victory over the host Vikings in the opening game of the best-of-three varsity boys’ championship series. Jeremy Lucio and Iain Cowie both had 15 points for the Vikings. Neelin will have a chance to sweep the series on Tuesday when they host Game 2 at 7:45 p.m.
