Cullen claims pair of titles

Brandon’s Kurtis Cullen left the Manitoba Racquetball Championship, which was held from Friday through Sunday in Winnipeg, with a pair of titles to his name.

Cullen, the top-ranked male racquetball player in Manitoba, won the provincial men’s singles open championship by beating Winnipeg’s Brian Campbell 15-3, 15-9 in the final.

He teamed up with Dennis Oteyza to win the open doubles title over Campbell and Gus Tsouras 16-14, 12-15, 11-8.

Connor Madill, an up-and-coming junior racquetball player, also won a pair of championships. The 13-year-old Brandonite won all three of his games — including a 15-1, 15-12 win over Winnipeg’s Bill Maretzki in the final — to win the men’s singles A title.

He also won the doubles open consolation championship with fellow Brandonite Cameron Wachs when their opponents didn’t show up to the final.

Wachs won the consolation final in the men’s open division by beating Winnipeg’s Matthew Kushnir 8-15, 15-2, 11-3 in the final.

Madill’s father, Pat, played with Jen Saunders — Canada’s top-ranked women’s racquetball player — in the open doubles competition, but they lost in a semifinal to Cullen and Oteyza.

Pat Madill also lost the men’s 35-and-over singles consolation final 15-12, 15-12 to Winnipeg’s Gregory Sawkey.

Teighan Fleming was the top women’s racquetball player from Brandon at the provincial championship.

She reached the women’s singles A championship, but lost the final 15-12, 15-8 to East St. Paul’s Cher Woodward.

Milana Paddock dropped the women’s singles B consolation final 12-15, 15-6, 11-7 to Winnipeg’s Liz Klippenstein.
