Brandonite Brayden Cuthbert scored the shootout winner as the Neepawa Natives stunned the Swan Valley Stampeders 3-2 Friday in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
Cuthbert also had an assist in regulation as the league’s last-place team ended the Stampeders’ four-game winning streak.
In Friday’s other games, it was: OCN Blizzard 6, Dauphin Kings 3; Winkler Flyers 1, Virden Oil Capitals 0; Winnipeg Blues 3, Waywayseecappo Wolverines 2; and the Selkirk Steelers 8, Steinbach Pistons 1.
At Swan River, Corey Koop made 38 saves in regulation and overtime for the Natives (9-21-4), then stopped five of six shots in the shootout. Mitchell Eisenberg and Max Flanagan tallied for the Stampeders (22-10-3).
Blizzard 6 Kings 3
At Dauphin, Nathan Bruyere had three goals and an assist for the league-leading Blizzard (27-9-3), who scored five times in the second period. Brandonite Mitch Van Teeling set up a pair of Jesse Sinatynski goals to give the Kings (23-10-2) a 2-0 first-period lead.
Flyers 1 Oil Capitals 0
At Virden, Reed Peters made 40 saves for the shutout, while T.J. Fairall scored 23 seconds into the third period for the Flyers (8-20-7). The Oil Capitals (12-18-6) got 28 saves from Ty Edmonds.
Blues 3 Wolverines 2
At Waywayseecappo, Kyle Bodnaruk broke a 2-2 tie with 2:29 to play in the third period. He finished with a goal and an assist for the Blues (22-12-0). Brett Pinkerton of Pilot Mound scored both goals for the Wolverines (13-17-3).
Steelers 8 Pistons 1
At Selkirk, the Steelers (21-13-2) scored seven goals in the first period. Shane Gingera and Hudson Friesen scored two goals apiece. Nick Kobelka replied for the Pistons (15-16-2).
