The Westman Wolverines’ season came to an end on Saturday with a 20-3 loss to the East Side Eagles in a Manitoba Major Football League semifinal, but head coach Dave Stantial couldn’t be prouder of his team.
The Wolverines showed a lot of heart as they played without their regular offensive tackles and were forced to use defensive players to fill in those voids. They also led the Eagles — who were 8-0 in the regular season — until late in the second quarter when East Side scored the game’s opening touchdown.
Falling behind, however, got Westman off its game plan a bit, but Stantial loved the effort his players showed as they tried to come back.
“We had a good game. We were happy with the way everybody was playing,” he said.
“We’re a big running team and got a little behind. That took us away from our strengths. We had to start throwing the ball and that was it.”
The Wolverines scored their points on a conceded safety touch and a 57-yard punt single by Kyle Pacheco. Shayne Sebree led the team with 68 yards on 15 rushes. Seth Hume finished 2-for-20 passing for 14 yards and two interceptions.
Ethan Jowett made 7.5 tackles, while Brendynn Tuttosi added three tackles and 2.5 sacks. Brendon Brydges forced a fumble that was recovered by Jared Sowiak.
While Stantial would have liked to reach the league final, he called the season a success. Westman posted its second-straight 4-4 record, reached the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and won its first playoff game to reach the semifinal.
“We would have liked to make it farther in the playoffs and made the final, but overall we’re pretty happy with the way things went,” he said. “We’re missing a couple key positions on the O-line this year, so for us to be able to run the ball the way we did, we’re happy with the way things went.”
