The Kamloops Blazers made a major move to bolster their Western Hockey League title hopes on Thursday, acquiring 19-year-old Brandonite Joel Edmundson from the Moose Jaw Warriors for a bevy of young talent.

A 6-foot-4, 208-pound defenceman, Edmundson was chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the second round (46th overall) of last year’s National Hockey League Entry Draft. He has two goals, six assists, 70 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of -11 in 29 games for the Warriors this season.

"Joel is a big, physical, two-way defenceman that will make us a harder team to play against," Blazers general manager Craig Bonner, who also received a fourth-round pick in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, said in a release. "The addition of Joel comes at a price, but we feel that he will solidify our defence as we enter the second half of the season."

In return, the Warriors get defenceman Tyler Bell, 18, forward prospect Jayden Halbgewachs, 15, and a first-round pick in the 2015 bantam draft. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Bell has a goal, three assists and 36 penalty minutes in 29 games this season, with a +1 rating. Halbgewachs was chosen 19th overall by the Blazers in this year’s bantam draft.

The Blazers, who lead the WHL’s B.C. Division with a 22-7-1-2 record, boast three Westman players on their blue-line as Edmundson joins rookie Jordan Thomson of Wawanesa and second-year veteran Landon Cross of Brandon.

The Warriors are second in the East Division, but tied for sixth in the Eastern Conference, at 11-13-3-4.
