Weeks of waiting are finally over for Brandonite Joel Edmundson.
After more than a month of negotiations, the 19-year-old Kamloops Blazers defenceman has finally signed his first NHL contract with the St. Louis Blues.
"It’s a great feeling," Edmundson said via telephone last night from Kamloops, B.C. "It’s been in the works for a month or two now, so it’s good to finally get it over with and now I can focus on my game on the ice."
The graduate of the Brandon Midget AAA Wheat Kings signed a standard three-year entry-level deal with the Blues, who selected Edmundson in the second round (46th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
While terms of the deal were not released, Edmundson said he was happy with the contract, which included a six-figure signing bonus.
"Very, very happy with it," said Edmundson, who wasn’t sure what his first purchase would be.
"I will probably end up buying a vehicle at some point, but my first purchase will probably be a new laptop or something small."
While pleased to sign, Edmundson knows there is still plenty of work ahead.
"It’s huge, but it’s just another step on the way to the NHL, I guess," he said.
The 6-foot-4, 208-pound defenceman has had a solid third season in the WHL with nine goals and 25 points while piling up 133 penalty minutes in 61 games with the Blazers (45-18-2-3), after being acquired from the Moose Jaw Warriors in December.
Over 188 career games in the WHL, Edmundson has racked up 15 goals and 68 points with 319 penalty minutes.
