Farmers clean up as MSBL hands out awards

Neepawa Farmers pitcher and shortstop Isaac Rodriguez was a double Manitoba Senior Baseball League award winner, claiming the Gord Smith Memorial Trophy as the league’s most valuable player and the Hamiota Red Sox Trophy as the league’s top pitcher.

Rodriguez post a 6-2 record on the mound with a 3.47 earned-run average and struck out 43 batters in 49 1/3 innings. He also had a .276 batting average, scored 12 runs and drove in seven more.

The Farmers — winners of the Les Edward Memorial Trophy as the regular season champion — ended up with five award winners, with Mike Levandosky winning the Andy Newton Trophy as manager of the year and Torey Scott sharing the Ian Lowe Memorial Plaque as rookie of the year with Brandon Cloverleaf Ryan Johnson. Scott posted a .257 batting average, scored 20 times and stole a league-leading 13 bases. Johnson had a .472 batting average and 13 RBIs. He allowed one unearned run in 15 2/3 innings on the mound.

The Cloverleafs’ Justin Funk and Reston Rocket Rory Tycoles shared the home run title — the Don Smith Memorial Award — with three blasts this season.

Rockets outfielder Buddy Mayert won the batting title — the Barry Moffatt Memorial Trophy.

Mayert posted a .400 batting average with 20 runs and 11 runs batted in.

Brandon’s Alex Campbell received the Ab Richardson Award for sportsmanship and dedication to the game of baseball and former Neepawa Farmers manager Garth White won the Dick Campbell Memorial Shield for volunteering.
