Farmers down Dodgers

Cam Tibbett’s two-run single in the top of the eighth inning lifted the Neepawa Farmers to a 7-5 victory over the host Oak River Dodgers on opening night in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League.

Tibbett went 1-for-2 and also scored a run for the Farmers, who lost in last year’s league final. Jason Vinnell went 1-for-5 and scored two runs, while Garrett Rempel also crossed the plate twice despite going 0-for-2.

The Dodgers were done in by walks, issuing 15 free passes in a game that was shortened to eight innings by darkness. Reliever Ryan Shaw took the loss, striking out eight and giving up only one hit in 4 2/3 innings, but allowing five runs on seven walks. Oak River starter Nelson Quark walked eight batters and gave up two runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Kyle Kostesky went 3-for-4 with two doubles for the Dodgers, scoring one run and driving in another. Morgan Geekie went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Reliever Josh Loewen pitched three innings of relief to earn the win for the Farmers. He allowed two runs on five hits, with two strikeouts and no walks. Daylon Creasy worked the first five innings, surrendering three runs on five hits and two walks, with two strikeouts.
