The Neelin Spartans got off to a solid start at the provincial AAA varsity boys’ volleyball championship on Thursday.
Osian Edwards had 12 kills as the fifth-ranked Spartans opened the tournament at Île des Chênes with a 2-0 (25-17, 25-18) victory over Flin Flon’s Hapnot Kopper Kings. Theo Farough chipped in with eight kills.
Neelin then fell to the third-ranked Dauphin Clippers 2-1 (25-19, 20-25, 15-9). Farough had 11 kills and Brandon LaLonde added eight.
The Clippers finished 2-1 through the tournament’s first day. They fell 2-1 (25-23, 11-25, 15-8) to the Kopper Kings before topping the Windsor Park Royals 2-0 (25-8, 25-15).
Meanwhile at the AAA varsity girls’ provincials at Lorette, the top-seeded Dauphin Clippers won their opening two matches. Dauphin topped the host Lorette Scorpions 2-1 (25-13, 20-25, 15-9) and Altona’s W.C. Miller Aces 2-0 (25-14, 25-14). The Virden Golden Bears, ranked sixth in the field, won their opener 2-1 (25-9, 17-25, 15-9) over Thompson’s R.D. Parker Trojans. They then beat the St. James Jimmies 2-0 (25-19, 26-24).
Preliminary-round play wraps up today with the playoffs taking place Saturday.
