Minnedosa’s rugby pitch has not been kind to the Brandon Barbarians Division 1 men’s team recently, and that trend continued on Sunday.
The Barbarians, who have won once on that field in the last four years, fell 33-15 to the Winnipeg Highlanders on Sunday at Minnedosa. That wasn’t the way the Barbarians wanted to wrap up their regular season and prepare for the playoffs, but club president Jon Fitzpatrick believes the team will be fine when it hosts the Winnipeg Wasps in Saturday’s semifinal.
“We have a bad history on this field,” said Fitzpatrick, whose squad finished first overall with an 11-4 record. “We’re going to chalk it up to that and get ready for the Wasps next week and treat this as a cursed field.”
Sean Common led the Barbarians with one try, one conversion and one drop goal. Nathan Peto scored Brandon’s other try.
Meanwhile, the Division 2 men’s team wrapped up its season on a winning note. Michael Birch scored two tries and two conversions as they beat the Sturgeon Creek Rowdies 34-19 at Minnedosa.
Derek Cameron, Matt Pentacost, Tyler Jury and Thomas Parish added single tries for Brandon, which finished the season 5-8-1 but out of the playoff picture.
The women’s team also saw its season come to end on Sunday, but it also ended with a victory. Stephanie Dornn scored two tries and kicked two conversions to lead the Barbarians to a 34-24 win over Sturgeon Creek.
Jamee George, Leann Murray, Krissy Loane and Essi Kruger all added tries for the Barbarians, who finished fifth in the league with an 8-6 record.
