STONEWALL — Stacey Fordyce has no shame in officially being knocked out from the Scotties Tournament of Hearts playoff picture on Friday.
After all, her team of Kelsey Russill, Janelle Schwindt and Roslynn Ripley are in their first year together and came to Stonewall to gain some experience. Plus they pulled off two big upsets this week.
On Wednesday, they beat 2011 provincial champion Cathy Overton-Clapham. On Friday they handed Pinawa’s Colleen Kilgallen her first loss of the event, a 10-7 decision.
"We’re pretty happy with that win, but we just went out and played," Fordyce said. "We had nothing to lose in that game and we picked up our game and played well. … It is the top teams in here and it’s nice to know we can play well against them and know we can still compete, even though we’ve come off a couple tough losses and not played so well earlier in the week. It’s nice to do that."
Fordyce (2-4) fell out of the playoff picture with a 7-5 loss to Karen Fallis Friday morning.
While no Westman-based teams will reach the playoffs, there is still hope for a few players with local connections.
At 3-3, Jill Thurston’s team — which features Brandon’s Kristen Phillips at third and Elkhorn’s Brittany Cousins at lead — can still secure a tiebreaker. So can Darcy Robertson’s team (3-3), which has Souris’ Michelle Kruk at lead, although the odds are long.
Those teams can enter a four-team tiebreaker scenario if Robertson beats Chelsea Carey (4-2), Kilgallen (5-1) defeats Fallis (4-2) and Thurston beats Overton-Clapham (3-3), who has won her last three games, in today’s final Red Pool draw.
Phillips knows it’s a slim chance to get a tiebreaker, but she’s happy to still be alive.
"I think it’s great because it means our game against Cathy means something," said Phillips, whose team fell 9-2 to Carey before rebounding with an 11-3 win over Robertson. "The game is really going to come down to the end. Obviously, we need Chelsea and Karen to lose to pull them back to the tiebreaker. All kinds of things have to happen, but that’s the fun with a tiebreaker."
Fordyce wraps up the round robin against Dauphin’s Lisa Menard (0-6).
Meanwhile in the Black Pool, Brandon’s Liza Park dropped to 0-5 with an 11-6 loss to Katherine Cameron. Her late game against Deb McCreanor (1-5) was delayed by ice problems and was still in progress at press time.
Barb Spencer led the Black Pool with a 5-0 record going into last night’s late games. She was followed by Jennifer Jones and Michelle Montford at 4-1. Cameron and Janet Harvey were still alive at 3-2.
The round robin will conclude today, when Park faces Thompson’s Charlene Norquay.
EXTRA ENDS: Friday’s final three draws were sold out, with 1,000 spectators filling the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex … China’s men’s curling team was on hand to watch Friday … Today’s 1-vs.-1 Page playoff game will be broadcast live on Sportsnet West and CityTV Winnipeg tonight at 8:30. Sunday’s semifinal (noon) and final (5 p.m.) will be shown on Sportsnet One.
