Brandonite David Glenn will take another shot at the Manitoba Rural Amateur, beginning Sunday, after finishing second last year.

Brandon’s David Glenn can’t wait to compete in one of his favourite tournaments of the year.

Glenn has regularly participated in the Manitoba Men’s Rural Amateur Championship for the last decade and this year will be no exception as he’ll be one of 61 competitors at the Neepawa Golf and Country Club on Sunday and Monday.

Although he had one of his best tournaments last year — finishing second after losing to Matt Burman in a playoff — Glenn isn’t putting any pressure on himself to improve on that result.

"I really like the course out there so it’s always a treat out there," said Glenn, who has never won the Rural Amateur. "I like tournament golf, so the Rural Amateur I’ve played in eight of the last 10 years. A couple times I’ve come close (to winning) but I haven’t really thought about winning."

This year’s event will feature an increase in the number of golfers, up from 53, which is just what Glenn likes to hear. The Brandonite was concerned that the two-day event may be dropped from the Golf Manitoba calendar as interest appeared to be waning in recent years.

Westman golfers have really embraced the Rural Amateur this year with 34 competitors coming from the southwest corner of the province.

"This year it sounds like there’s a good turnout," Glenn said. "It’s a good tournament and good time for a lot of guys to come out and show their game on the golf course. … I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that it’s in Neepawa. Guys like their golfing around here and it’s a great golfing month because the courses are mature and the greens are healthy. I’m sure it will be a good turnout and an event."

The tournament is also a chance to showcase the Neepawa course. Last year’s flood cost the club a chance to host the Manitoba Men’s Amateur, and this is the first major event it has hosted since reopening all 18 holes.

"I’m really, really looking forward to it to showcase the golf course for sure," said Landon Cameron, the club’s general manager and head pro. "It should be an exciting test for everyone playing."

JUNIORS: Glenboro’s Zach Wytinck and Erickson’s Bobbi-Rae Uhl begin the two-day Manitoba Junior Bantam Championship today at Winnipeg’s Tuxedo course.

<B>CHIP SHOTS: Neepawa is hosting the Beautiful Plains Community Foundation charity tournament on Friday, the same day the fourth annual Caitlyn Arksey Memorial Tournament will be held at Deer Ridge Golf Course … The MGI Wealth Tour continues on Saturday with a men’s open at Deer Ridge … The Minnedosa Golf and Country Club will host a women’s tournament on Sunday … The Westman Junior Tour stops at the Oak Island Golf Resort on Tuesday … A junior golf tournament will be held at the Northern Pines Golf Course on Aug. 16 … The Glenboro Golf and Country Club will host a celebrity tournament on
