The host Crocus Plainsmen varsity girls’ basketball team didn’t get off to the start they wanted at the Forbidden Flavours Java Jam tournament on Thursday afternoon.
The Plainsmen fell 59-23 to Garden City. Stacey Shearer led the Crocus with seven points, while Alicia Phillips had 26 for Garden City.
The Virden Golden Bears beat the Neelin Spartans 74-49 on the strength of 25 points from Jade Smith. Paige Thomson led the Spartan attack with 24 points.
River East Collegiate beat Vincent Massey 68-38.
Isabella Selk had 25 points for River East, while Tara Vancauwenberghe replied with 13.
Winnipeg’s John Taylor Collegiate defeated Garden City 52-46. McKenzie Kumpt had 15 points for John Taylor while Abby Loewen responded with 14.
In junior varsity girls’ basketball, Crocus won its first game, beating Swan Valley 56-30. Chantal Kowalyk scored 13 for the Plainsmen.
Kildonan East Collegiate beat Neelin 83-5. Jenna Teixeira scored 10 points.
Virden defeated Vincent Massey 58-38. Morgan Kobialko had 18 points for the Golden Bears.
The tournament wraps up Saturday in the Crocus Plains gym.
