Garrioch eighth in marathon

Brandon’s Fiona Garrioch finished eighth overall among 170 women running in the Manitoba Marathon on Sunday in Winnipeg.

Garrioch placed second out of 33 racers in the female 30-34-year-old age group with a time of three hours 39 minutes 7.6 seconds. Sue Lucas of Dauphin was 19th among all women and won the 50-54-year-old group with a time of 3:50:33.5 Juraj Karcak of Brandon was the first Westman runner to cross the line, placing 39th overall with a time of 3:19:33.9. He was 11th among 50 competitors in the men’s 40-44-year-old division.

Winnipeggers Brian Walker and Alice Sherwin were the men’s and women’s overall winners, with times of 2:36:44.0 and 3:04:38.2, respectively.

In the half-marathon, Neepawa’s Daniel Heschuk placed fifth overall with a time of 1:15:15.7. He was the fastest of 137 runners in the 15-19-year-old age group. Eric Henderson of Brandon was 12th among all men in the half-marathon in 1:18:43.6.

Erica Nielsen of Brandon was the top women’s finisher in the half-marathon, placing 54th with a time of 1:45:51.3.
