Morgan Geekie scored three times in a 12-player shootout on Sunday as the Yellowhead Chiefs beat the Parkland Rangers 2-1 in Dauphin to earn their first Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League victory of the season.
Jordan Robertson scored in regulation time for Yellowhead (1-2-0), while Brett Friesen made 44 saves. Dauphinite Connor Shaw stopped 34 shots for Parkland (2-1-1).
Elsewhere Sunday, it was: Southwest Cougars 5, Interlake Lightning 4 (OT). On Saturday, it was: Kenora Thistles 3, Brandon Wheat Kings 2; and Wpg. Thrashers 1, Cougars 0.
Cougars 5 Lightning 4 (OT)
At Teulon, Kyle Braybrook scored the overtime winner for the Cougars (1-3-0), who came out on top despite leading Interlake (1-2-2) for only one minute and 31 seconds in regulation time. With a goal and an assist, Tanner Lewis was the only Cougar with more than one point. Brett Opperman, Nial Mills and Montana Masson also scored for the Cougars.
Thistles 3 Wheat Kings 2
At Kenora Ont., the Thistles (1-3-0) gave up the first goal, but rallied for the win by scoring three times on the power play, while Ben Dennis made 42 saves. Duncan Campbell scored both goals for the Wheat Kings (3-1-0), who got 13 saves from Tyler Gutenberg.
Thrashers 1 Cougars 0
At Winnipeg, Ryan Gardiner settled the goaltenders’ duel by scoring with eight minutes to play in the third period. Ryan Kubic of the Thrashers (3-1-0) stopped all 20 shots he faced, while Tyler Crowe made 34 saves for the Cougars.
