Golden Bears win title

Jade Smith went off for 22 points for the Virden Golden Bears on Saturday to lead them to the Java Jam varsity girls’ basketball tournament championship at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School.

Virden’s Natalie Vachon was named the tournament MVP, while teammate Heidi Smith was the defensive player of the event, which the Golden Bears won with a 77-61 victory over the Dakota Lancers in the final. Tristen Ogonoski had 23 points for the Lancers, who had Kelsey Thorkelsson named to the all-star team.

Neelin’s Paige Thomson, Kildonan East’s Martina Akot, Westwood’s Nikki Majewski and Rachel Hill of St. Mary’s were also named to the all-star team.

Crocus Plains’ Frances Krinke received the leadership award.

VARSITY GIRLS

Neelin 61 St. Mary’s 42

Thomson put up 20 points to lead the Spartans to a third-place finish. Hill replied with 17 for the Flames.

Kildonan East 52 Vincent Massey 49

The Reivers won the fifth-place game with the help of Akot’s 19 points. Brittany Boschman had 19 for the Vikings.

Westwood 57 Crocus Plains 53

Majewski, who will join the Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team next season, had 19 points for the Warriors in the seventh-place game. Desirae Peiffer had 17 for the Plainsmen.

JV GIRLS

Selkirk 44 Kildonan East 22

Morgan Raposo put up 11 points to lead the Royals to the junior varsity championship. Aimee Garland posted nine for the Reivers.

Virden 86 Crocus Plains 27

The Golden Bears finished third with Samantha Siemens pacing the team with 17 points. Paige Donald had 15 for the Plainsmen.

Grandview 79 S. Valley 24

Bailey White netted 15 points for the Spartans in the fifth-place game, while Jillian Maga posted 12 for the Tigers.

Vincent Massey 55 Neelin 20

The Vikings were paced in the seventh-place game by Jada Benoit’s 14-point effort. Jessica Hutcheson had six for the Spartans.
