Gymnasts going to Winter Games

Westman’s gymnastics team that will compete at the Manitoba Winter Games was decided at a qualifying event at the Brandon Eagles Gymnastics Centre on Sunday and 13 of the 14 athletes that earned spots are from the Eagles’ club.

Rebecca Ellis scored 47.5 total on her four events to post the best score in the advanced girls’ category. She will represent Westman in the 12-year-old age category with fellow Brandonite Amber Pomeroy, who scored 46.0. Brandonites Morgan Boryskiewich, who scored 46.3, and Natasha Jones, who posted a 45.9, will compete in the 10 to 11-year-old age group, while Brandon’s Shae Worthington (47.4) and Jody Pottinger (45.4) of the Neepawa club will be in the 13 and over age group.

Kristjan Frederickson scored 35.0 to top the advanced boys’ rankings. He’ll compete in the 10 to 12-year-old age category, while Tyler Jones, who’s also from Brandon and scored 31.8 points on his four events, will represent the region in the 13 and over age group.

In the provincial 2 category, Haley Gross scored 47.9 points and was followed by fellow Brandonite Seren Tucker at 47.1 to secure their spots at the Manitoba Games in the division’s 13 and over age group.

Nicole Russel had the best score of the event at 49.9, and was followed by Emma Scott at 48.5. Both of them will be in the provincial 2 12-year-old competition. Brooklyn Pratt and Lauryn Henriques, who scored 48.4 and 46.2, respectively, made the 10- to 11-year-old squad.

The Manitoba Winter Games will be held in Morden, Winkler and the RM of Stanley from March 2-8 with the gymnastics events taking place between March 2 and 5.
