Westman athletes swept the medal podium in boys gymnastics in four events to wrap up the first half week of action at the Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games on Wednesday in Morden, Winkler and the RM of Stanley.
Kristjan Frederickson, Ricky Frederickson and Rhett Cruickshanks of Brandon won gold, silver and bronze in the all-around competition, as well as the floor event and on rings in the 10-12-year-old boys regional stream division.
K.Frederickson, Cruickshanks and R.Frederickson also placed 1-2-3 on the low bar and parallel bars, while Ricky and Kristjan Frederickson finished 1-2 on vault, with Cruickshanks fourth. K.Frederickson won another gold on the mushroom, with Cruickshanks earning bronze and R.Frederickson placing fourth to round out a big day for the Brandon Eagles Gymnastics Club members.
At the mid-point of the Games, Westman sits third in the medal standings with 14 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze for a total of 38 medals, behind Winnipeg Blue (43 medals) and Winnipeg Gold (44 medals).
Reg Pohl of Douglas and Carson Gerring-Boyechko of Brandon scored as Westman’s boys team came up a goal shy of winning a bronze medal Wednesday, falling 3-2 to Interlake.
Westman’s junior girls team wrapped up their Games by sweeping aside NorMan 8-4 in the seventh-place game on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Westman’s junior boys foursome brushed by Eastman 7-6 to win the fifth-place game.
Second-half Phase 2 sports run today, tomorrow and Saturday, with Westman competing in badminton, figure skating, girls hockey and mixed and Special Olympics curling events.
