Andrew Harris, Desiree Scott and the Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball team were honoured at the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association awards on Sunday night in Winnipeg.
Harris was named Manitoba’s male athlete of the year, the second straight honour for the CFL all-star running back with the B.C. Lions. Meanwhile, Scott earned the female athlete of the year award after helping Canada earn a bronze medal in women’s soccer at the 2012 Summer Olympics, while the American Association champion Goldeyes were picked the team of the year.
The Goldeyes topped a field that included Canada’s silver-medal winning world senior curling championship team skipped by Neepawa’s Kelly Robertson, the Esso Cup national midget girls hockey champion Pembina Valley Hawks, the national champion FC Northwest U-18 boys soccer team and the Allan Cup-winning South East Prairie Thunder. Among the finalists that Harris beat out was Glenboro’s Josh Wytinck, the provincial amateur golf champion and Golf Manitoba’s amateur golfer of the year.
