The Yellowhead Chiefs were unable to overcome an early 3-1 deficit on Friday night as they lost the opening game of their best-of-five Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League quarter-final 4-3 to the Pembina Valley Hawks in Shoal Lake.
Ashton Anderson, Josh Martin and Jake Coulter scored for Yellowhead, while Bradley Bowles added a pair of helpers.
The Chiefs will visit the Hawks on Sunday for Game 2.
Also on Friday, it was: Winnipeg Thrashers 7, Southwest Cougars 3.

At Winnipeg, the Thrashers exploded for five goals in the third period to open their best-of-five quarter-final with a victory.
Daylon Creasy, Cameron Whyte and Jordan McCausland all scored for Southwest, which hosts Game 2 on Sunday in Souris. Zak Hicks added a pair of assists for the Cougars.
The Brandon Wheat Kings open their quarter-final against the Kenora Thistles tonight at 7:30 at the Sportsplex.
