Hawrysh, Montgomery miss medals overseas

Brandon’s Cassie Hawrysh and Russell’s Jon Montgomery missed the medals on the Intercontinental Cup skeleton tour Friday in Altenberg, Germany.

Hawrysh, a 29-year-old Neelin high school graduate, placed ninth in the women’s race with a combined two-run time of one minute, 59.73 seconds. Hawrysh finished 2.18 seconds behind winner Sophia Griebel of Germany.

Meanwhile, Montgomery, the 34-year-old gold medallist in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, notched a sixth-place finish in the men’s race with a combined time of 1:55.95, finishing 1.07 seconds behind winner Alexander Mutovin of Russia.

Hawrysh and Montgomery race again today on the IC tour, with the Bobsleigh Skeleton Canada set to name the national team on Wednesday for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
