Brandon’s Cassie Hawrysh finished eighth in a women’s skeleton race in Altenberg, Germany on Friday to move up a spot in the World Cup standings.
In her first attempt at the Altenberg track, Hawrysh was the top Canadian, posting a two-run time of two minutes 3.37 seconds in heavy rain. She finished .78 seconds behind winner Marion Thees of Germany.
“It was a tough day, with the exception of Cassie,” Canadian skeleton coach Duff Gibson said in a news release. “For her to finish eighth in just her first time at Altenberg is great and she really missed an Olympic qualifier (top-six finish) by one corner.”
The result moved Hawrysh, a 27-year-old World Cup rookie, into seventh in the season standings, passing Melissa Hollingsworth for second on the Canadian team.
Jon Montgomery, 33, of Russell competes in the men’s skeleton event today.
The World Cup circuit moves on to the Königssee course in Germany next week.
