Brandon native Cassie Hawrysh won a silver medal in women’s skeleton in the Canadian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Championships on Saturday in Calgary.

Hawrysh, a 28-year-old Neelin High School graduate who now lives and trains full-time in Calgary, posted times of 59.32 and 59.92 seconds, trailing only national champion Sarah Reid in the event, which is a qualifying race for the Canadian team selection trials. Another qualifying event is coming up this weekend in Whistler, B.C.

Meanwhile, 2010 Olympic gold medallist Jon Montgomery, 33, of Russell finished fifth in the men’s championship on Saturday.
