Apparently, the Brandon Wheat Kings were the cure for what ailed the Lethbridge Hurricanes’ offence.
Entering the game last in the Western Hockey League in goals scored and power-play percentage, the Hurricanes showed plenty of firepower on Wednesday night, rolling to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Wheat Kings.
Brady Ramsay, in his return from a five-game suspension, and Macoy Erkamps both had a goal and two assists for the Hurricanes (4-6-0-0).
Jayce Hawryluk opened the scoring with his first WHL goal for the Wheat Kings (6-4-1-0), but the night quickly went downhill from there as Jay Merkley tied the score only 40 seconds later for the first of six unanswered Hurricane goals.
"After that we never had any life on our bench and could never find any momentum," Wheat Kings assistant coach Darren Ritchie said.
Jaimen Yakubowski and Ramsay also scored in the first period for the Hurricanes. Erkamps and Daniel Johnston had power-play goals in the second period, before Russell Maxwell scored on a breakaway in the third as Lethbridge peppered Brandon goalie Curtis Honey with 46 shots.
"We have to get better at (defensive play)," Ritchie said. "We have to get the shots down, we have to be prepared to block shots, do the little things: Knock guys down in front of the net, everything that we preach about. We need to get back to basics in our
D-zone."
ONE-TIMERS: Lethbridge went 3-for-6 on the power play, while Brandon was 0-for-3 … Former Wheat Kings G Ty Rimmer made 35 saves for the Hurricanes … D Riley Van Horne made his WHL debut for the Wheat Kings … Brandon scratched RW Jason Swyripa (wrist, indefinite), LW Richard Nejezchleb (upper body, day-to-day), C/RW Daniel Asham and C/LW Kord Pankewicz … C Braylon Shmyr, the Wheat Kings’ first-round pick in this year’s WHL Bantam Draft, has made Alberta’s team for the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup next month in Calgary, while Brandon’s second-rounder, D Tanner Browne, was named to the British Columbia squad. C Kirkland Lycar, selected by Brandon in the fourth round of the draft, was previously chosen for the Manitoba team … After losing 7-6 to Brandon on Tuesday, Medicine Hat acquired G Cam Lanigan, 20, from Portland on Wednesday for a seventh-round pick in next year’s bantam draft.
