A shoulder injury will prevent Brandon Wheat Kings draft pick Stelio Mattheos from skating in this week’s Hockey Manitoba Program of Excellence Top 40 under-16 camp in Portage la Prairie.
Mattheos, chosen first overall by the Wheat Kings in this year’s Western Hockey League bantam draft, was injured while playing for the Winnipeg Monarchs in the western Canadian Bantam AAA hockey championship last month in Kelowna, B.C.
He’s one of three injured players who will attend the camp but will not skate or take part in fitness testing. Cole Kirkup of Souris has been invited to the camp as an injury replacement.
Meanwhile, Brandonite Kristen Campbell, Melissa Hunt of Hartney and MacGregor’s Sheridan Oswald will miss the Manitoba under-18 female camp because they’re taking part in Hockey Canada’s strength and conditioning camp in Hamilton. Extra players were already invited to the provincial camp to compensate for the expected absences.
